Commercial Billing Specialist

Summary:  Responsible for submitting claims and following up with insurance companies.

Job Functions:

• Prepare and submit clean claims to various insurance companies either electronically or by paper.
• Answer questions from patients, insurance companies and clerical staff.
• Identify and resolve patient billing complaints.
• Prepare, review and send patient statements.
• Follow and report status of delinquent accounts.
• Perform various collection actions including contacting patients by phone, correcting and resubmitting claims to third party payers.
• Participate in educational activities and attend monthly staff meetings.
• Conducts self in accordance with North Sunflower Medical Center’s employee manual.
• Maintain strict confidentiality and adhere to all HIPAA guidelines and regulations

Skills/Experience:

• Knowledge of medical billing and collection practices.
• Knowledge of computer programs.
• Knowledge of business office procedures.
• Knowledge of basic medical coding and third party operating procedures and practices.
• Ability to operate a computer and basic office equipment.
• Skill in answering a telephone in a pleasant and helpful manner.
• Ability to read, understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, employees and the public.
• Must be well organized and detail oriented.

Miscellaneous:

• Exemplify excellent customer service with patients, visitors and other employees to show courtesy, friendliness, helpfulness, and respect.
• Maintain and ensure patient privacy and confidentiality.
• Take initiative to be proactive in assisting others without direct supervision and to resolve problems with other departments and co-workers.
• Ensure building is clean, organized and presentable for patients and visitors.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
